A glimpse into student life with Lochie Brooke
There is no better way to understand what college and university life is like than to hear from a UNE student themself! Lochie Brooke, is in his third year of studying a Bachelor of Animal Science and is also the Senior Resident Student Leader at Austin/Earle Page College. Lochie spoke with us about his time at UNE, what he has enjoyed as a college student, and what his plans are for the future after his degree.
What attracted you to UNE and influenced your decision to stay at Austin/Earle Page?
Coming from Brisbane with a little idea of what college or even life in Armidale involved, I never intended to stay beyond a first year. After involving myself in many sporting/cultural and social activities the decision to stay in the college environment for the past two years has been made with ease.
What’s your favourite part of college life, and why?
My favourite thing about college is the community built within. Always knowing you have a bunch of friends around that you that you can lean on is a pretty incredible thing to be a part of.
What have you learnt from university life that you didn’t expect?
I did not expect to have the opportunities to further develop my personal and professional skills outside of university education. Gaining the roles of Resident Fellow in my 2nd year, going on to Senior Resident Student Leader this year in my 3rd year, has greatly increased my personal skillset for all aspects of life.
Have you found any favourite places to hangout in Armidale yet?
Westside Espresso café is my favourite hangout spot in Armidale! They have the friendliest staff members around and always manage to put a smile on your face.
Why did you decide on Bachelor of Animal Science?
I had originally enrolled to study Zoology at UNE because I have a keen interest in all things Animal related. But then I discovered Animal Science and the major of Wildlife Management which suited my career interests perfectly. I swapped degrees after my first trimester and haven’t looked back.
So far, what’s the best thing about being at University?
Connections I have made with a wide array of people. I love listening to people talk about what they are passionate about. In such a diverse community I have met so many interesting people and made many friendships for life.
Are you a part of any extra curricular activities – like Clubs and Societies, or team sports etc? If so what are they and what do you enjoy about them?
Since coming to Armidale I have gotten myself involved in many sports, one of the highlights being mixed netball at UNE which I had never done before and really enjoyed. Being a part of the Earl Page Coast Run committee and participating in the event in my first year was a great extra curricular highlight for me.
What is your dream career?
I would love to work in a zoo with involvement in animal conservation projects and/or research.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I see myself working in the field of animal conservation either working in, or towards my dream career. There’s a good chance I’ll be wearing khaki shorts.
